Batteries for Charity Program
The concept is simple. When a customer who needs
a battery (usually a $5 to $10 dollar charge)
asks "How much?" they are told there is no charge
for the battery or installation, but a contribution
to a specified charity would be greatly appreciated.
Other services such as watchband sizing, cleaning,
polishing, and inspection of rings and other jewelry,
and other small repairs are also done at no charge
and again if the customer asks "What is the charge?"
A contribution is encouraged but of course not
required.
Not only does this free watch battery program
raise money, but equally as important it raises
awareness to the needs of charitable groups within
our community. Along with the donation canister,
literature about the designated charity is also
prominently displayed and available for customers
to take. Customers are not only able to contribute
financially but can also learn about ways they
may contribute their time and talents helping
others. People feel that they are just not being
asked for a handout but rather given an opportunity
to learn about the need, and then donate money
that they would have spent anyway often times
going well above the cost of the battery.
"It's heartwarming to see how generous people
are when they learn about the needs in our community",
explains Tom Brown. Charities that the battery
program has helped include the Spraypark at Clintonwood
Park, The United Way, Stuff a Bus program, the
Rainbow Connection, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society,
the A-T Walk for Carly Benefit, the American Cancer
Society's "Relay for Life, Christmas in Action,
Open Door Outreach, the Oakland County Food Bank,
and the 3-Day walk for Breast Cancer.
